HughesNet Internet Service Plans - Speed Comparison

HughesNet's Internet access speeds are considerably faster than standard dial-up speeds. With these increased speeds, subscribers have the ability to download large files, enjoy an enhanced online experience, and be more productive. The table below compares the estimated time of typical Internet downloads using HughesNet Service Plans versus a 56K dial-up connection (speed based on typical response times).

Ever just want to check your email, but first you have to dial-in... and wait, and log in... and wait? How does the word 'instant' sound to you? With HughesNet, your Internet connection is always-on, so you can enjoy high-speed Internet the moment you sit down at your computer. Take a look at how HughesNet speeds compare with dial-up.

Dial-up service comparison based on standard dial-up connection at 56Kbps. HughesNet speeds are based on download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps for HughesNet ProPlus service, 1 Mbps for HughesNet Pro service, and 700 Kbps for HughesNet Home service. Actual speeds vary based on the amount of traffic on the Internet, content on a particular Website, or by the overall performance and configuration of your computer. Stated speeds not guaranteed.

Limitations Of Satellite Internet

Although the new HughesNet modem increases upload and download speeds for all residential and business service plans, high-speed Internet by satellite service is STILL NOT recommended for some sub-second time-sensitive types of Internet uses. The sub-second delay (latency) of satellite Internet access affects connection speeds. While this sub-second delay is mostly unnoticeable in general web browsing, it may have a significant impact on time-sensitive applications. Therefore, we do not recommend the following applications for use over HughesNet:

Real-time online gaming, particularly "twitch" games such as Quake, Diablo etc.
Real-time collaboration and conferencing, such as NetMeeting or videoconferencing
VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) Internet phone service
Online day trading

In addition, connecting to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) with the HughesNet service is not recommended, despite the faster speeds available with the HughesNet modem. If you choose to run VPN over satellite, your data speeds may be reduced as much as 50% to 75% while the VPN session is active. Once the VPN session is terminated, the subscriber's typical connection speed resumes. HughesNet Technical Support does not provide configuring or troubleshooting support for subscriber's issues associated with VPN connections.

Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite service, that data must travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This round trip adds about a half a second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server.
